Norman Powell To South Beach
HEAT RECEIVE: A
Norman Powell
The Heat essentially acquired a 20-point-per-game borderline All-Star for two role players, one of whom is nearing the end of his career and could be retiring soon. The Heat were never known for tanking, so this move doesn’t surprise me as much as what they gave up to get Powell. Miami’s offense has significantly upgraded and they may still pursue Bradley Beal. Pat Riley is slowly making a comeback after being slandered as the team president during the whole Jimmy Butler situation.
CLIPPERS RECEIVE: B
John Collins
This trade isn’t bad, but it’s a little confusing. Powell was the 2nd leading scorer on the team and provides crucial spacing for Harden and Kawhi. Yes, Powell’s role did diminish after the return of Kawhi Leonard though.
The Clippers had a great chance at beating Denver last year, but inconsistent shooting and Aaron Gordon heroics ultimately sent them packing. With the shooting already a question mark, moving Powell seems like the complete opposite of what you’d think to do if you’re LA. Collins won’t help the Clippers spacing much, but it does give Harden a lob threat. The Clippers will have a big front court next season. Again, not a bad trade, but a weird trade.
JAZZ RECEIVE: C
Kyle Anderson
Kevin Love
2027 Second-Round Pick
The Jazz have been shopping John Collins for a while now, so his trade wasn’t much of a surprise. However, they definitely could have received a larger package for him. Last season, Collins averaged 19 points and 8 rebounds per game, shooting nearly 40% from three on almost four attempts per night. At the very least, I would’ve thought Utah could receive multiple second-round picks. It feels like Utah is rushing to get off of their veteran assets (Collin Sexton, John Collins, Jordan Clarkson).
